Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari (b. May 29, 1940) was President of Pakistan from November 14, 1993 until December 2, 1997.
Leghari was born in Choti zareen, a village of Dera Ghazi Khan, on May 29 of 1940. He comes from a political family that has been active in politics in this part of the world since the pre-colonial days. His father Sardar Muhammad Khan Leghari and grand father Nawab Sir Muhmammad Jamal Khan Leghari had both been ministers.

History and Background

After his initial schooling at the "Eton" of Pakistan, Aitchison College, Lahore where he was the head boy and declared the Best Leaving Student of 1957. He graduated with honours from the Forman Christian College, Lahore, Punjab where again he was amongst the best students, he went on to study at Oxford University.

After returning to Pakistan he joined the Civil Service and served for some time in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). On the death of his father he resigned from service and came back to his roots to look after the tribal affairs of his tribe. He is the head (Sardar) of the Leghari tribe.

Early Years


He joined the Pakistan Peoples Party, and was made leader of the party upon the imprisonment of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He was put under house-arrest several times during during the military regime of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

In 1993, with the express support of the Pakistan Peoples' Party he ran for the office of President and won the election against Wasim Sajjad. In November 1996, he dismissed the Peoples' Party Government of Benazir Bhutto on charges of corruption, lawlessness and extra judicial killings.

Following the word of the Constitution of Pakistan he held elections for the National Assembly in 1997. The elections were won by the Muslim League and Nawaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister. A thumping majority in the lower house of parliament led the Sharif Government to remove the controversial 8th amendement from the constitution of Pakistan. Farooq Leghari saw this as a threat to his power and conspired with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (Sajjad Ali Shah) to sack the Sharif Government. This lead to an uprising against him and the Chief Justice of Supreme Court and both, Farooq Leghari and Sajjad Ali Shah were forced to resign.

Current Status

Instead of retiring from politics, and he went to create his political party, the Party of the religion, which entered the coalition parties of 7, known as the National Alliance (which opposes the government to Musharraf.), To participate in the general election of 2002. The National Alliance, however, did not appear as the dominant power in the elections, and won 13 seats in the National Assembly, most of them members of his family. Farouk Leghair Naional abandoned the coalition and make an alliance with one Govt. , Who opposes. Entered into a coalition with the majority party to form a government, came his son Awais Ahmed Leghari, Federal Minister for Communications and Information Technology, and as a result, the last of his deputies Yar Muhammad Rind is also introduced in the Federal Council of Ministers. Been prepared Mohammaed later Ali Durrani and the daughter of his brother, owner Samira from his party in the Federal Cabinet. It has recently been his eldest son Jamal Leghari elected to the Senate in Pakistan. Ferial Leghari his daughter is a research assistant at the Gulf Research Center in Dubai.


Pakistan's ex-President Farooq Leghari passes away
Former President of Pakistan Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari died of heart ailment at a local hospital here late on Tuesday night. He was 70.
The ex-President was under treatment for heart-related disorders. And due to deteriorating health conditions, he was being kept on ventilator but despite best efforts to save his life, he could not survive.
Farooq Laghari breathed his last at 1:45 AM PST [20:45 GMT], hospital sources said to media.As per reports his body is to be flown to his ancestral town in Dera Ghazi Khan where he is to be laid to rest. The funeral prayer would be offered in his native city Dear Ghazi Khan at 4:00pm today, Wednesday.Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari, was the eighth President of Pakistan from November 14, 1993 until December 2, 1997.
