Chaudry Shujaat Hussain was born on January 27, 1946.A political icon in Pakistan, has a political career stretching over 25 years and belongs to a family that has always supported military rulers. although he is generally perceived as somewhat politically inarticulate and suffering from poor health, he has nevertheless proved himself to be a politician.His father late Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi was a seasoned parliamentarian who played a major role in restoration of democracy and human rights in the country and was awarded “PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE” by the Amnesty International. Late Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi was assassinated in a terrorist attack on 25th September, 1981. 

Education

Graduated from Forman Christian College, University of Punjab in 1967 and obtained degree in Industrial Management Course from U. K.

Political Career
Belongs to an influential political family. His father late Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi was a seasoned parliamentarian who played a major role in restoration of democracy and human rights in the country and was awarded “PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE” by the Amnesty International. Late Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi was assassinated in a terrorist attack on 25th September, 1981. Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain is the first cousin of Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, ex-Chief Minister of the Punjab.
His family had no political background until father Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi, a lower middle class man, became a local councillor in the early 1950s. The family is now an industrial powerhouse, involved in sugar, textiles, flour mills and agriculture. Elahi connected his family to the elite of the country through a web of marriages. The family was always prepared to join hands with military rulers, serving Gen ayyub Khan (1958-68), Gen Zia ul-Haq (1977-88) and now Gen Pervez Musharraf (Oct 1999-2008).

He entered politics in the year 1981 and became Member of Federal Parliament Majlis-e-Shoora (1982-85). Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has held many a portfolios of Federal Ministers in his political career. He has remained Minister for Information & Broadcasting  (1986), Minister for Industries & Production (1987-88), Minister for Interior (1990-93), and Minister for Interior & Narcotics Control (1997-99).
 
He was Leader of the Parliamentary Party of PML in National assembly of Pakistan during 1985-86. He later led the Opposition Parliamentary Party in National assembly from 1988 to 1990. Chaudhry Shujaat was elected Senator in February 1993 and remained so till 1997, where he was Chairman, Senate Standing Committee on Defence, Defence Production & aviation. He became President of Pakistan Muslim League, Punjab in 1997.

Interior ministry

Hussain was the leading member of right-wing alliance, the Islamic Democratic Alliance (IDA) and successfully endorsed his parliamentary seat during the first party 1988 general elections, and headed the Parliamentary Party of Joint Opposition (PPJO) in the National Assembly from 1988 to 1990. He also acted as the parliamentary party leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) in the National Assembly.
Chaudhry Shujaat was an active political leader as well, heading the Parliamentary Party of Joint Opposition in the National Assembly from 1988 to 1990. After the 1990 general elections and 1997 elections, Chaudhry Shujaat served as the Internal minister of the Interior ministry and served as one of high-profile cabinet member of Prime minister Nawaz Sharif who appointed Shujaat as the President of the PML-N in Punjab from 1997 to 1999 However, Hussain mounted serious disagreement and confronted Nawaz Sharif after Sharif imposing economic emergency in 1998, and took control of the Karachi Stock Exchange. Hussain’s relations became extremely hostile during the Kargil war and claiming that Sharif had been briefed by chief of army staff general Pervez Musharraf six times as opposed to Sharif claiming not having a “knowledge”.He remains supported the 1999 coup d’état and backed the military for removing the Prime minister from the power.

He then became Member of the National assembly in October, 2002 and his party PML (Q) formed the Government. He was leader of the PML (QA) parliamentary party in the National assembly. He became the President of Pakistan Muslim League (QA) in January, 2003 and on May 12th, 2004 he was elected the President of Pakistan Muslim League (Q).He then became Member of the National assembly in October, 2002 and his party PML (Q) formed the Government. Chaudhry Shujaat had helped his old friend Zafarullah Khan Jamali, a politician from Balochistan, to become prime minister in November 2002, but along with President Musharraf became dissatisfied with his performance.

As matters came to a head, Jamali handed in his resignation on 26 June, 2004, citing personal reasons for stepping down. Chaudhry Shujaat took over in an interim capacity as the 20th prime minister of Pakistan and the 11th in the past 20 years. He resigned two months after taking office, when finance minister Shaukat Aziz, who had already been nominated for the job by President Musharraf, took over upon attaining eligibility by being elected to the National Assembly from one of the seats given up by the Chaudhry Family.

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain became the Prime Minister of Pakistan for a short tenure of three months. He remained Prime Minister from June 2004 to august 2004.
He resigned in august 2004 as Prime Minister to devote full attention to his party as President.

Today, he is not that popular as he lost in the recent General Elections but he is still determined to serve Pakistan with more commitment and dedication.Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain endorsed and provided his vital support to appoint his lifelong friend Zafarullah Khan Jamali as country’s first Baloch prime minister. Previously, he also played a vital role in bringing the role of Shaukat Aziz in national politics. However, in 2004, Jamali lost his trust and his relations with the prime minister soured that subsequently ended in resignation of Jamali
    
After Jamali’s resignation, Shujaat Husain nominated Economic minister Shaukat Aziz for the office of Prime minister Shujaat temporarily took over the office of Prime minister, but due to member of Senate Aziz had been unable to be elected. The media noted that Hussain was probably only warming the seat for Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz who would wait to get elected to the National Assembly, although he was a member of the Upper House and for that reason, barred from prime ministerial ship according to Constitution, before taking up the post.

At the Parliament, Hussain told the media journalists that his election to the National Assembly and later as the Prime Minister was “not an interim appointment” but in keeping with the Constitution.[4] In an interview, Shujaat Hussain quoted: “My nomination by Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali and nomination of Shaukat Aziz after consulting the President were in line with the set traditions. There should be no hue and cry over such technicalities.”.
On August 23, 2004, Hussain transfer and handed over the office of prime minister to Shaukat Aziz after successfully being elected from his constituency, though Hussain remains the party president of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q).

Personal life

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain is the eldest son of Chaudhry Zahoor Ilahi, and has been connected with the families of past military dictators, including Ayub Khan, Yahya Khan and general Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.His younger cousin, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, previously served as the chief minister of Punjab and currently is a senior member of current government. His younger brother, Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, is also senior member of the current government
