Ahsan Khan's adolescent looks might give the impression that he is new to showbiz, but he has been around for more than five years. He has seen the rise and fall and best of all, it has taught him that choosing the right project is the best policy. Having worked with every imaginable private TV channel, besides a stint in Lollywood as a dancing protagonist, today Ahsan has matured into a dependable actor. But he was not always this successful.
When I started acting I did the film Nikaah and the very same year did Hans Ki Chaal for PTV. I had no idea what medium was meant for me so I tried my best to succeed at both. Nikaah was a super hit while the play, which was also an excellent project with Firdaus Jamal sahib and Sana, didn't do too well and suddenly I found myself in the category of film actor thanks to the masses, he says.
Ghar Kab Aao Gay, the film in which Indian singers were introduced for the first time under pseudonyms, was also a hit and I was everywhere. Then something happened that made me change my field. I was in London for Javaid Fazil's twin projects, Khayal and Chashmaan, when I was told that Waada, a Sangeeta venture for which I had barely give any time, was in theatres. I was shocked for I had done just one song and two scenes for the film and was expected to shoot more. I was really upset. The reputation I had built up after Nikaah and Ghar Kab Aao Gay was in ruins, the actor says while describing what briefly drove him away from films.
I want to be loved by all, be it the elite or the middle class or anyone else. I want even a thelewala to love me for the actor that I am. Actors are the only people who can improve the aesthetic taste of viewers by opting for better roles, says Ahsan Khan
After coming back, Ahsan did the late Ashfaque Ahmed's Shala Kot. I was offered so many good projects that I decided to work for TV only. And as for films, he decided that he won't do one unless it was something as great as Ghar Kab Aao Gay or Nikaah.
So why did he accept Imran Malik's Tere Bin Jiya Na Jaye? It was not a typical Pakistani film and I think I made the right decision, not because Imran Malik is the son of Pervez Malik sahib, but because he is an educated guy who is also technically correct, and whom I had worked with in ARY's Taqdeer. He gave me a role that mattered and I also got a chance to choreograph the Shaan-Shreya Ghosal-song Pagal Nahin Tha which was liked by many in India and Pakistan.
Ahsan believes PTV has played an important role in making him successful.
I was lucky enough to work with PTV's best last year when I got a chance to work in Peshawar Television's Ajnabi Raastay Ajnabi Manzilein. The play was written by Naseem Nasir, with whom I share an excellent rapport. But I still accepted the project after declining it for four months. it went on to be declared a hit by PTV's Gallup report.
Ahsan describes his love for acting as boundless. I want to be loved by all, be it the elite or the middle class or anyone. I want even a thelewala to love me as that's the main reason I act. I try not to be become popular by cheap means because I believe that actors are the only people who can improve the aesthetic taste of viewers by opting for better roles. I am in love with acting and I am still getting good projects and a chance to work with the best people in the industry. I'm happy that Safaid Posh, in which I played the lead, was declared one of the best plays on local TV in 2004.
As for international exposure, he says, I acted for a British play a couple of years back in London and learnt a lot about acting on their television. Recently I was also approached by a Scottish TV channel for one of their plays. I am doing Kuch Rishtey Kachchay Dhaagon Kay for an Indian channel, which has been directed by the person who directed Des Main Nikla Hoga Chaand. I was referred to him by Indian choreographer Saroj Khan who worked with me in Ghar Kab Aao Gay. I also have a Bollywood film offer from a big director whose name I won't disclose since I don't know whether I'll be doing the film or not. It might sound like the typical O ji mujhe bhi offer aayee hai Bollywood se but I'll name the director only if I agree to do it.
On the personal front, Ahsan has an identical twin brother besides two elder sisters and an older brother. He is the youngest in his family, along with his twin, of course. As for his education, he never stuck to one school because of his family's constant shuffle between England and Pakistan. I was doing my Masters in English Literature from Government College, Lahore, but had to postpone it because of acting. But I plan to complete it in the future. I also want to study acting and even talked to Anupam Kher who is running an acting school in India.
Lastly, what's the difference between Ahsan Khan of yore and the one today? The Ahsan Khan who started acting out of passion knew nothing about it, was a non-serious guy and hated the camera.
Today, I have matured as an actor, am in love with the camera, see my work as my pride and have some know-how of acting, script and what the director wants. It is through the support of my fans that I am what I am today.
